David Brewer

David Brewer, 44, died Tuesday April 29, 2003 at 10:20 am in the Death House at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. Mr. Brewer died of lethal injection administered by the State of Ohio. According to family and loved ones, Mr. Brewer should have been granted clemency. He admitted guilt and remorse, had no record before the crime and was an exemplary model prisoner serving 17 of his 18 years “ticket-free”. The 9-0 clemency vote was a shock to many who knew David. At his clemency hearing, Mr. Brewer had affidavits and testimony from state employees as well as scores of recommendations from departmental employees.

Mr. Brewer had resided the last 18 years on Ohio’s death row both in Lucasville and Mansfield, OH. While in Lucasville SOCF he worked for eight years as an administrative clerk. While on both death rows, he resided on the honor pod. When schools visited death row, David often composed and delivered talks to the students. Originally from Franklin, David was a married college graduate who worked as a rental appliance store manager in Centerville until his move to death row in 1985. Mr. Brewer leaves behind a loving family including his Uncle Phil, his cousin Beverly, his sister and parents.

His final words, “Just that I’d like to say to the system in Ohio as far as the death row inmates are concerned there are some that are innocent. I’m not one of them but there are plenty that are innocent. I just hope the state recognizes that.”
