Lewis Williams

Lewis Williams, 45, died Wednesday January 14, 2004 at 10:14 am in the death house at Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville. Mr. Williams died of lethal injection administered by the State of Ohio. Mr. Williams is survived by his loving mother Bonnie Williams and several brothers and sisters.

Mr. Williams had resided the last 20 years on Ohio’s death row both in Lucasville and Mansfield, Ohio. Originally from the Cleveland area, the Williams’ family now resides in Columbus.

Mr. Williams declined a final meal but rather chose to pray with the Bible. Mr. Williams fought his case through to the end. His case challenged legislation on cases involving mental retardation, ineffective counsel ,as well as the cruel and unusual punishment of the lethal injection medication. His fight was not over with the denial of his stay by 6th Circuit. Lewis struggled with the guards and was carried to the death chamber by SOFC guards. Mr. Williams’ last words, “I’m not guilty. I’m not guilty. God, Please help me. God, Please help me. God, Please hear my cry.” He continued to speak as the lethal injection began and the microphone was removed. Still struggling to speak and move off of the table, Lewis stopped moving at 10:08am and was pronounced dead at 10:14 am.
