Help Us Reach Out to the Quiet Majority of War Opponents

September 28, 2011

Last summer, the war in Afghanistan became the longest official war in our country's history.  A year later - roughly ten years after U.S. troops first entered Afghanistan - we are still embroiled in a war and occupation ostensibly begun to disrupt the actions of terrorist groups, despite recent findings by U.S. intelligence agencies that there are "at most" between 50 and 100 al Qaeda members remaining in that country. One soldier sent to Afghanistan costs $1.2 million a year; money which could fund 30 well‐paying jobs at home.

The public isn't buying this war any longer.  According to surveys, the majority (56 percent) of Americans believe that we should end the war in Afghanistan, but our politicians continue to allow the war to drag on in opposition to the public will. Needless to say, the situation isn't going to change itself.  It is vital that we encourage the quiet majority of war objectors to be more visible about their opposition.
