A Crisis and an Opportunity

The UN World Food Program tells us that food price hikes may not be temporary. The UN International Fund for Agriculture predicts food riots. Indeed this has happened in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Egypt, Senegal and Morocco. Can we blame people?

The causes for the crisis are varied but not totally unexpected. Predictions of food shortages to come have been ignored for 20 years. The immediate reasons are known and many have to do with short sighted and narrow self interest. Immigration Facts

Immigration And Taxes: All undocumented immigrants (about 25% of all immigrants in the US) pay taxes. Between 1/2 and 3/4 of undocumented immigrants pay federal and state income taxes, Social Security taxes and Medicare taxes.

Immigrants And The Crime Rate: Research shows that immigrants commit fewer crimes than native born Americans.

Immigrants And The English Language: Hispanic immigrants are following the same pattern for proficiency in English as immigrants followed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

Immigrants And Work Visa: The US gives a total of 66,000 H2B Visas every year. This is for all non-professional temporary workers except agricultural workers. The need far exceeds this number.

IJPC Platform- Election 2008

The elections of 2008 are crucial not only for the citizens of the United States but for the people of the world and the earth itself. Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center encourages its members and friends to study the issues, reflect on them from the perspective of nonviolence, the common good, the needs of people living in poverty, human dignity appreciation of diversity and respect for the earth.

There are many issues of concern. IJPC offers the following ideas based on its main foci. The dignity of the human person each made in the image of God and the sacredness of creation underlies all IJPC’s positions.

DP: The News from Ohio

In September 2007, the American Bar Association released its report on Ohio’s death penalty system. Of the 92 recommendations with which the ABA evaluated Ohio’s death penalty, Ohio failed to meet 93% of the standards.

On January 7, 2008, Kenny Richey was released from the Putnam County courthouse, after spending 21 years on Ohio’s death row. Two days later, January 9 John spirko a commutation from death to life without parole. Both men received relief due to questions of innocence.
