Adopt a School
IJPC is focusing its efforts on a specific set of schools that are excessively targeted by military recruiters and have the fewest amount of resources to cope with the influence. Using the Freedom of Information Act we have created a list of the schools with with highest rate of army recruitment. This list was then refined to reflect schools that are unable to effectively deal with excessive recruitment by looking at student teacher ratios, number of guidance counselors, and percentage students on free and reduced lunch. Teams of volunteers have been gathered and trained to present to guidance counselors, librarians, career support people, and social workers at the selected schools. We have had exciting progress at some of the schools and are excited for more!
We focus on Mt. Healthy, Holmes, Virtual, Newport, Deer Park, Western Hills, Finneytown, and Woodward high schools to present and distribute excellent unbiased packets of information about things to consider before enlisting as well as local alternatives. Volunteers commit to:
-
A 2-hour training session by IJPC to learn how to present the material.
-
Meeting with three school support people.
-
Learning information about school groups, PTOs and actual recruiter practices.
-
Providing IJPC with you progress and information along the way and requesting our support whenever necessary.
