Declaration of Peace Week - Sep. 21-28, 2006 |
The Declaration of Peace is a nationwide campaign to establish by September 21, 2006 concrete and rapid plan for peace in Iraq, including:
*a prompt timetable for withdrawal of troops and closure of bases
*a peace process for security, reconstruction, and reconciliation
*and the shift of funding for war to meeting human needs.
If this plan for peace is not created and activated by Congress by September 21, the International Day of Peace, Declaration signers across the U.S. will engage in nonviolent action in Washington, D.C. and in communities throughout the nation.

Town Hall - Monday, Sept. 18 |
The Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center is sponsoring a Town Hall Meeting focused on the Local Impact of War in Iraq at St. Monica St. George Parish Newman Center (328 West McMillan St). Democratic Candidates John Cranley and Victoria Wulsin as well as aides from Rep.Chabot and Rep. Schmidt's office will listen to the testimony of citizens and have an opportunity to make final remarks.
After four years of being at war in Iraq, the local impact of war can clearly be felt. Citizens will gather to comment on a variety of issues including the toll of having loved ones serve numerous tours in Iraq, the availability of federal funding for programs such as health care, education, and social services, the steady decrease in federal dollars to the Cincinnati budget since 2002, the increase of returning soldiers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as well as other topics. Georgine Getty, the director of the Greater Cincinnati Coalition for the Homeless, will be the moderator. After eleven short testimonies, there will be a brief period of open mike of 15 minutes followed by final comment by Victoria Wulsin, John Cranley, and aides for Schmidt's office and Chabot's office.
“The human cost of war goes beyond those killed or injured in Iraq. Everyone in Cincinnati is affected by quality of life issues because of policies that put war ahead of social concerns. Imagine how different our city would be with health care, safe and clean housing, secure well paying jobs and quality education for all of us. Our Congressional Representatives will have the opportunity to hear from a few of the increasing majority that share that vision,” says Curt Braman, an event organizer.

Civil Disobedience - Wednesday, Sept 27, 2006 |
Press Release & Statement: Local Citizens Bear Moral Witness Against Iraq Occupation with Nonviolent Sit-In in Rep. Chabot's Office
Statement From Those Risking Arrest
We the people of the United States of America have committed a great and terrible crime.
We have attacked a sovereign nation.
We have killed over 100,000 civilians including women and children.
We have caused religious hatred to flourish.
We have spawned civil war.
Claiming to spread democracy and protect the peace, we have instead perpetrated violence and misery.
A small group of Americans have come today to see Congressman Steve Chabot and ask him to sign the Congressional Declaration of Peace, which calls for a prompt timetable for withdrawal of troops and closure of bases; a peace process for security, reconstruction, and reconciliation; and the shift of funding for war to meet human needs.
We believe the war in Iraq was wrong from the start, and its continuation worsens the crime we have committed.
Every citizen has a responsibility to try to prevent wrongdoing by the state. So great is our responsibility to end this war that we believe we must try new ways of communicating with those in power. Our phone
calls, letters, petitions and marches have so far failed to sway Congressman Chabot. We are here today in yet another effort to enlist his help in ending the war.
We will not voluntarily leave until Congressman Chabot signs the Congressional Declaration of Peace.
Over 800 leaflets were didtributed to passersby on the strret level while the sit-in was taking place - download flyer
